I like the style you used i.e. present tense for the scene-setting, past tense for the events described.
(ギャレット - somehow "flat round flaky cake" doesn't have quite the oomph of garotte XD. However, galette in French does refer to any flat circular object, among other things e.g. money, CD/DVDs, though no relation to any sort of lasso)
