Welcome to the comm. :) Don't ever worry about asking too many questions--that's what we're here for.
-The novels were written by Sakaki Ichirou first, and then came the manga, which was also written by Sakaki-sensei but drawn by . . . wossisname . . . Yabuki Gou? There was also a second manga series released under a Junior imprint whose mangaka I can't recall at the moment. Then Bones released the anime.
-I would say the anime is a streamlined version of the novels since the novels tend to be much more disturbing and much more humorous by turns. There are also a number of differences re: characters' personalities and relationships for reasons I can't quite fathom. All in all, though, the anime follows the general flow of the novels much more closely than the manga.
-The series is technically complete at thirteen novels, but sensei went on to write five supplemental novels with subject matter ranging from events that took place during the Genesis War to life after the end of the series.
-I don't know of any place you can read the novels online. I just bought them from jamazon for . . . I think around 500円 a pop (not counting shipping).
